Francesca Ghermandi
Francesca Ghermandi was born in 1964 in Bologna, where she currently lives and works
In 1983/84 after receiving her diploma, she enrolled in the Architectural faculty in Florence, which she attended for a few years; at the same time attended a comic strip course held by the group Valvoline and Andrea Pazienza.
In 1985/86 her first publications of comic strips on the daily newspaper Reporter and on the magazine Frigidaire and illustrations on daily newspaper Il Manifesto, where she worked for many years.
For Tusitala the illustrated book Naufraghi a Granconia, written by G.Baldassarri.
She participated in the show Dr. Pencil & Mr. China at the Gam di Bologna and at the Biennale Giovani del Mediterraneo in Salonicco.
In 1987/89 she bagan a collaboration with illustrations for various magazines: Il Gambero Rosso, Lei, Marie Claire, Per Lui, Il Giornale dei Commercianti, Uomo Vogue, Vanity, Teleram, Pubblico, Pubblicit Domani, Accaparlante and La Nuova Ecologia.
Published short comic stories for Frigidaire, Sortiez la Chienne ed Echo des Savannes in France, El Vibora in Spain and on La Dolce vita, where the character Hiawata Pete is born.
She creates various commercials for companies such as British Airways and Saatchi & Saatchi.
Exhibits at the festival of Lucca and at the Treviso Comics.
In 1990/1993 on the magazine Cyborg the character of Helter Skelter is born and on Comic Art, Joe Indiana.
Collaboration comic strips for Strapazin (Switzerland), Il Grifo, Kitchen Sink Press (USA),Rubber Blanket (USA).
Publishes the first episode of Suburbia written by M. Semerano. The collection of the comic strips of Hiawata Pete come out for the editor Granata Press and the book Joe Indiana-Il segno dei cinque for Comic Art.
Designs the character of the spot Fallo protetto for Positivs-Saatchi & Saatchi.
Participates in a collective show at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome.
In 1994/96 a collaboration with comic strips for Streepburger (Slovenia), Mano, Comic Art, Comix, Mtv (UK) and Linus.
For the Phoenix editor the Albi Mondo Gomma n. 1,2,3 are published, which are a collection of short stories published in the 80's.
She creates, for Swatch, the watch Pop Swatch.
Participates in the collective shows at the festival of Angouleme (France), at Expocomics in Bari, at the National Museum of Cartoon in London, a Gulp! 100 anni a fumetti in Ferrara and in la Loggetta Lombardesca in Ravenna.
She receives the prize Signor Bonavventura in Treviso Comics for the book Hiawata Pete.
In 1997/2000 Began collaborations with comic srtrips and illustrations for Zero Zero (USA), Black, L'Unit, Alias, Telma, Internazionale, Marco Tropea, Einaudi, Garzanti, Salani, Giunti, Ed. Riuniti, Sossella, Il Saggiatore.
The comic strip books Helter Skelter, Pastil, Pastil 2, Rebo are published for l'editore Phoenix and the illustrated book Le Avventure di Cipollino, written by G. Rodari for Ed. Riuniti.
She creates for Swatch the watch Swatch Loomy, the little animated symbol for the Rai 2 program Cocktail d'Amore and a few commercials one of which the ministry campaign No XS per Bozell.
Participates in various collective shows in Milan, Castiglioncello, Athens, Torino, at the book fair for kids in Bologna and with A. Pessoli, at No Border in Ravenna.
Exposes in Rome at the Teatro Valle, the originals of the book Pastil and in Bologna, at the Galleria Squadro, the silk-screen paintings of Quella teppa dei miei amichetti.
Receives the prizes: Lo Straniero a Roma, Miglior autore completo at the festival of Lucca Comics and the prize Jacovitti/Lisca di Pesce at Expocartoon in Rome.
In 2001/03 Pastil's third book comes out (Pastille/ Pastilla) for Editions du Seuil (France) and for Sinsentido (Spain).
It's published for the same publishers and for Fantagraphics Books (Usa) the book Bang! Sei morto and in Italy it's published for Einaudi Pasticca.
With the text of R. Piumini, comes out for Ed. Riuniti the book Le Avventure di Ulisse.
Exposes at the Biennale dell'Illustrazione of Bratislava e al festival Fumetto di Lucerna.
In 2004/05 a colaboration with comic strips for the magazines Strapazin, Graphic Classic (USA), Comic Journal (USA).
For Fantagraphics Books the first comic strip comes out (of a series of six) Grenuord, with the skull character of George Henderson.
Creates the animated acronym for the 62nd Biennale Cinema of Venice. In Bologna, for the Sala Borsa ragazzi library draws the mural panels of the 0/4 rooms and creates the logo for the review screen and the boards for the film library.
The anthology show Quella teppa dei miei amichetti at the Museo dell'Illustrazione of Ferrara.
